Top 5 Colombian Transfers Abroad
By: Lugo | January 14th, 2009So far, at least:
On 5h place Danilson Cordoba (the one on the left) to Consadole Sapporo of the J-League. The Japanese league does not get much coverage from the spanish-speaking media in general so it was hard for me to find out about this one. Danilson Cordoba is a strong, tall, physically-oriented attacking midfielder who pretty much fell off the radar in terms of the National Team. Going to Japan won’t help him get back to the NT, but his game can give Sapporo fans a nice success story and he’s young enough to make the unlikely jump to europe.
Cesar Valoyes (Again, on the left) to Veracruz in Mexico comes in 4th altough he’s not going to play 1st division at the begining. But if the Mexican Sharks can surround him with decent service and players who can take advantage of his great speed and sharpshooting instinct, certainly Cesar can sparhead the promotion effort.
Carlos Darwin Quintero to Santos Laguna takes the 3rd spot after being the best player in the Colombian League last year. Mad dribling skills, monster speed and a knack for persistant scoring make him one of the best signings at the Mexican League this season. My only worry is that he is too similar in his game to the Ecuadorian Christian Benitez so the coach may not be inclined to play them toghether. Benitez is rumored to leave to Europe, tough.
2nd place is for the most promising Colombian striker of recent times Hugo Rodallega who will leave Necaxa of the Mexican League to join Wigan Athletic in the Premiership. Rodallega was top scorer of his team last season with 9 goals (6-month span) and is remembered also for being top scorer in the u-20 south american championships that Colombia won on home soil in 2005. Back then he was mistakenly attributed a quote about “being better than Messi” when in fact what he said is “Look, I am scoring all these goals but all the press is doing is talking about Messi. I have scored more goals than Messi, so why the press doesn’t talk about me??”
And the 1st place in our count down goes to Fredy Heynker Montero who appears all but set to join Real Betis of the Spanish League. He was rumored to head to MLS but I’ve heard from sources in Barranquilla, his city of origin that he will fly spain-bound on January the 15th. Betis has been the only rumor in the news but I won’t discard a different destination on the Iberic Peninsula. Nevertheless, if it’s Betis, then it’s certainly a higher profile team than Rodallega’s.
Honor mention to John Kennedy Hurtado who’s a defender on trial at AC Milan and to Efrain Cortez, the Millonarios defender rumored to go to Lazio. If any of those two turns out to be real, then they’ll blow everybody else off the water. Transfers to the Argentinian league seem to be on hold for now.

Interesting article. Just what is the state of football in Colombia right now? I’d be interested to hear more. Rodallega seems like a promising player, likely to be given some bedding in time at Wigan before Heskey leaves in the summer.
