Colombian Guide to Nicknames (II)
By: Lugo | April 4th, 2008Cucuta Deportivo
The motilones were an indigenous tribe from the Eastern side of Colombia known to be fiery. So the modern version of this warrior tribe is their soccer team. Therefore, the Tribe sounds cool to me. Now, if we want to rip off an American nickname, we could go with The Braves.
Deportivo Cali
This team has two historical nicknames: Los Azucareros (Sugar Men? Sugar Boys? Sugar Coateds???) because Cali is in the Sugar producing region of Colombian and La Amenaza Verde, which means The Green Menace, the one i’m going with.
Deportes Quindio
They are from Armenia which is known as the Miracle City even before it survided it’s devastating 2005 (04? I’ll check up on that) Earthquake. So Miracle Men or The Miracles seem interesting choices. What about “The Angels”?
Deportes Tolima
The Pijaos were another tribe from ancient times and since The Tribe is taken by Cucuta, The Warriors seem now applicable. But if you want to go with, “The Crazy Indians”, well, that’s up to you…
Deportivo Pasto
Down below near our southern border (with our “friendly neighbors”, Equador) the supporters of this team call themselves “Los Cuyigans” merging the name of a medium sized rodent called Cuy which is actually a typical dish of the region, with the word hooligans. So I wanted something a little less complicated relating them instead with their geographical condition in the southern border. Something along the lines (and recent developments with Equador) of Border Patrol, The Border Men, The Last Frontier, etc. The problem is that Cucuta is also a border town with Venezuela (Another “Friendly Neighbor”) so we might have to look at something as long as “Southern Border Reds” or simply The Southeners.
Deportivo Pereira
Matecaña actually means cane plant. So Cane Plant Cutters is a nickname that is related to all the people in this region. So for the team I really believe that the Cane Cutters or just The Cutters sound really cool.
We have six more to go, but remember that all these nicknames will be appearing in my fixture reviews so make sure you know who’s who.
